Mark K. Bowen, M.DOrthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Mark Bowen is a board certified Orthopedic surgeon, concentrating on sports-related and traumatic injuries to the Knee and Shoulder. His areas of special interest include: ACL Reconstruction, Knee and Shoulder arthroscopy, treatment of meniscal tears, rotator cuff and labral injuries and Achilles tendon repairs.

Selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 1998 to 2018, Dr. Bowen has been Head Team Physician of the Chicago Bears since 1992, and the Chief of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at NorthShore University Health System. He has also served as Team Physician to the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, New York Giants, and the Big Ten Conference.

Dr. Bowen is an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine – and received the James K. Stack Teaching Award for excellence in resident education. He also serves as a Clinical Instructor, the Pritzker School of Medicine and is a frequent instructor for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and the author of numerous publications on the repair of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. Dr. Bowen has published more than 55 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts on ACL treatments, rotator cuff repairs and other studies of the knee, shoulder and elbow. He has also shared his knowledge and experience speaking at over one hundred national and international meetings.

Dr. Bowen received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1985 as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor Society. He also won the David Drusin Memorial Prize in Medicine, Clarence C. Coryell Prize in Surgery and the T. Campbell Thompson Prize for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Bowen’s postgraduate training began with an internship at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center followed by Orthopaedic Residency at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery. He then completed a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery where he was awarded the Philip D. Wilson Award for Outstanding Research and was the assistant team physician for the 1991 Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.

Dr. Bowen continues to give back to his community by participating in Operation Walk mission trips, educating high school and college athletes, parents and coaches about Sports injuries, prevention and other Sports Medicine topics. Dr. Bowen and his wife, Margot, have 3 sons – Wilson, Ross, and Ned.
